English with the Experts
In an effort to respond to the need for modern English language teaching and learning in the mining region of Spain, The American Center opened its doors in downtown Mieres as an independent school in 1985. In 2011 a second school was opened in Oviedo. Our staff is entirely made up of college-educated, native speakers of English, to ensure up-to-date communicative standards. Now a well-established local learning institution, we gain new clients just by word of mouth. Many of the people who learned to speak English at our school, even those who have moved away, stay in touch with us The positive contribution our school has made over the years, not only to individuals but to society as a whole, means a lot to us.
We also provide a wide selection of language courses abroad, including summer programs and year-round academic courses.
Winner of the UNESCO Aula de Paz Camín de Mieres Associated School "Valuable Foreign Language Teaching Contribution" Award, organized by the Consejería de Cultura del Principado de Asturias, the Mieres City Hall, and the Dirección Provincial de Educación y Cultura en Asturias, 1997.

Desde 1984 The American Center se dedica a la enseñanza de la lengua inglesa en las cuencas mineras de Asturias, comprometidos con la calidad en nuestros cursos. Mieres
A Friendly Town in the Heart of Beautiful Asturias
The American Center is located in downtown Mieres in central Asturias Spain. This municipality (pop. 45,000) includes the capital Mieres del Camino and the smaller towns and villages of Baiña, Figaredo, Cenera, Loredo, Bustiello, La Peña, La Rebollada, Santullano, Santa Rosa, Seana, Ujo, Urbies, Valdecuna, Santa Cruz, Ablaña, Turón, Gallegos, and Bustiello. The city used to be the heart of the coal mining industry in Spain and the industrial backbone of Asturias. You can easily reach the gorgeous Costa Verde, the historical city of Oviedo (30 km away) and many other important places in Spain, by bus and the regional trains, FEVE and RENFE.
Nestled in a valley flanked by mountains along the banks of the Caudal River and on Route 66, in one of the loveliest regions in Spain, there is a sprinkling of small museums and cultural centers, cozy art galleries, and numerous restaurant–bars, boutiques and shops. Most shops are located along Manuel Llaneza Street and the pedestrian mall on La Vega Street, as well as at the new mall. On market days the Mercado de Mieres and the side streets are filled with vendors, including Gypsies (Gitanos, selling a wide variety of products, especially farm produce, cheese, hams and textiles. The local Catholic church, San Juan de Bautista, is next to the Plaza de Requejo, or “Cider Square”, which is popular for al fresco dining and tapas; the city park, Parque Jovellanos, is great for relaxing, doing sports and having an evening stroll. The Plaza del Ayuntamiento(city hall plaza), is where festivals and other cultural get-togethers take place. The most popular and important festival in Mieres is St. John's Bonfire, La Foguera de San Juan, on the eve of June 24, where the culmination of excitement is a huge midnight bonfire; there are lots of fun cultural events, dancing, outdoor concerts, fireworks, al fresco dining, tapas and drinking. Another important festival is the Folixa na Primavera in April, which includes dance and music performances from the nine Celtic nations, food, drink and especially cider. Asturian cider is probably the best in the world. Parking is a problem as it is in much of urban Spain so walking, taking the bus, a taxi and the train are the best ways to get around
There is a strong traditional flavor to Mieres which contrasts delightfully with the modern University of Oviedo Engineering Campus. Local dishes include Urbies cheese, cider, ham and peas, pork and bean stews (fabada and pote asturiano), grilled chorizo, pitu de caleya (large locally-farmed chicken), and locally-caught trout. Visit artistic monuments such as the Romanesque Santa Eulalia Church, the Palacio de Arriba in the hills of Cenera, the Santuario de los Mártires, and Santa Cristina in the hills of Pola de Lena. Pine, hazel, oak, ash, beech and walnut trees grow in the surrounding grassy hills and woods.
WHAT THE TEACHERS SAY
Lisa Malmgrem, a teacher at The American Center
"I came to Asturias with the idea of staying for nine months as a way to get a bit of teaching experience, and to perfect the Spanish I studied at the University of Massachussetts, Boston. It's been nearly three years now, and I still haven't left. I fell in love with Asturias, concretely with the wonderful people I have met and who now form integral parts of my life. I love the slow-paced life that I live here in Asturias, working teaching English, and yet still having a lot of time to myself, exploring Asturias´ natural paradise and enjoying a nightly wine with people who have come to feel like family."
Benjamin Stenson, a teacher at The American Center
Autumn Kycia, a teacher at The American Center
“There are many tourist attractions, such as the beach, the mountains, the ski-station or natural reserves. You can hang out and drink apple cider, sidra, the famous traditional drink of the region. Asturias has a rich bar culture and a vivid nightlife. People are very friendly and it is easy to make friends. Never expect anyone to be on time!
The weather is not what one would expect from sunny Spain since it is so close both to the Atlantic Ocean and the massive mountain range towards the South, the Cordillera Cantábrica, which divides Asturias from the center of Spain. Be prepared for rapidly changing weather pretty much all year round.”
Amy Scott-Samuel, a teacher at The American Center
